willowleaf sunflower, swamp sunflower Interesting Notes

An explosion of bright yellow flowers with dark brown eyes forms in midfall on small upright plants. Narrow elongated foliage. Sunflower look for front of garden borders and beds. Birds enjoy the seeds. - Must Have Perennials™

Who needs genetic engineering or nuclear power plant accidents when you've got Mother Nature? Yes, we're talking about the hot, incredible shrinking sunflower. Imagine taking our native swamp sunflower, Helianthus angustifolius, and shrinking it from 8' tall to 1' tall. The leaves are still intact as are the flowers, it's just now you can plant it in the rock garden instead of the back of the border. In October, the 20" wide clump is smothered with large, yellow sunflower blossoms. - Plant Delights

Helianthus salicifolius 'Low Down' Growing and Maintenance Tips

Prefers average, well-drained soils. Grows best with added moisture but can tolerate drought. Allow seed heads to remain for winter food for birds. Divide clumps in spring or fall every 3 to 4 years. Contrary to the straight species, 'Low Down' forms a nice clump over time and does not spread rhizomotously.
