poverty rush Interesting Notes

A tough and durable cool season rush, Juncus tenuis is called poverty rush by its ability to thrive in inhospitable locations along pathways and in highly compacted soils. J. tenuis is deer resistant, semi-evergreen, and has some salt tolerance. It grows 6”-24” tall and equally as wide; its diminutive growth pattern belying its tenacious nature.

Cosmopolitan is a term of endearment for plants that could be understood as rampant. Poverty rush pays no heed as it travels the globe in cooler temperate climes and especially throughout North America, finding itself in open woodlands, gravelly seeps, foot paths, pastures and abandoned fields, gravelly margins of roadways, and barren waste areas. It is easy to grow in average to wet soil in full to part sun.

As with most Juncus spp, Juncus tenuis is forage and habitat for birds and insects alike being a widely adapted plant whose leaves provide shelter and building material, its seed provide sustenance, and its fibrous roots anchoring the soil and providing accommodation for those who can hide beneath it. It is great as a diminutive filler for rain gardens, as a groundcover, and for erosion control.
