Discovered by Rob & Rosy Hardy of Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants in the UK.
Gaura is from the Greek gauros, meaning superb.
Gaura lindheimeri is named for German immigrant and "Father of Texas Botany" Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer, who explored Texas for plants, helping found New Braunfels where he settled and became editor of the local newspaper in 1852.
Prefers well-drained, sandy, loamy soil. Flowering stems may become leggy and flop, particularly when grown in rich soils or too much shade. Plants can benefit from close planting or support from adjacent perennial.
Can tolerate heat, humidity and drought. Best used for xeriscaping, perennial gardens or naturalized areas. Can be propagated by seed or division after 2-3 years.
Deadhead during the flowering season to prolong bloom length and cut back in early spring for flush new growth and to control size. May self seed in autumn if spent flowers are not cut back.
