Dryopteris filix-mas is native to North America from Newfoundland to British Columbia, from New England to the Great Lakes, and from South Dakota to Washington south to California and Texas. This fern is also native to Europe.

Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part sun to full shade. Prefers consistently moist, humusy soils that are rich in organic matter.
