Carex flacca 'Blue Zinger' (glaucous sedge)

Carex flacca 'Blue Zinger'

glaucous sedge

This Emerald Coast introduction is indeed an improvement over the species. It is much more light blue than what we'd previously grown. Excellent and versatile shade groundcover for dry or moist spots. Cool season, evergreen in warm climates, more clump forming than C. flacca.

glaucous sedge Interesting Notes

Blue sedge spreads to form a mat of bluish-green foliage. The plant can be used as a ground cover or in rock gardens. Best growth occurs in the sun but the plant will grow in shade. -Michigan State

"Ornamental grasses can be a beautiful addition to any garden," said Mary Hockenberry Meyer, co-author of Ornamental Grasses for Cold Climates. Grasses vary in color, size, and growth patterns and can add a nice sense of movement to your landscaping. Meyer said, "Most grasses are virtually pest-free and winterhardy." For this reason, they are usually a practical, economical and long-term investment. They are easy to grow, even in areas and soil where other garden plants often fail. "One issue with ornamental grasses is deciding where to plant them and how to incorporate them into your landscape," said Meyer. Perennial borders are often a good place to start experimenting with ornamental grasses. There are a number of sizes and varieties that are suitable for this type of landscaping.

Carex flacca 'Blue Zinger' Growing and Maintenance Tips

C. flacca can be found in calcareous grasslands and marshes in Europe and is adaptable to a wide range of soils. Drought tolerant once established. Spreads slowly by rhizomes. Propagate by division of clumps every few years. Cut foliage to the ground in early spring before new growth occurs. Use in containers, or as a slowly spreading groundcover in the shade and rock garden.
