Additional Information about Lonicera sempervirens 'Magnifica'
A cultivated variety of the North American coral honeysuckle, ‘Magnifica’ sets itself apart with vibrant orange blooms that are even more intensely hued than those of the straight species, which typically range from reddish-orange to coral-red. These striking, trumpet-shaped flowers are sweetly scented and bloom over an extended period, attracting a host of pollinators—including butterflies, bees, and, most notably, hummingbirds.
After the floral display, bright red berries appear, providing a valuable food source for birds and adding seasonal interest. The vine climbs by twining, making it ideal for adding vertical beauty and wildlife support to structures such as pergolas, arbors, fences, trellises, and railings.
Fast-growing and extremely vigorous, 'Magnifica' often reaches its mature size within a single growing season under ideal conditions. The deep green foliage carries a subtle bluish tint and is considered semi-evergreen—remaining green in milder climates, but typically dropping in colder regions.
In addition to its ornamental appeal, this honeysuckle is both deer-resistant and non-invasive, making it a responsible and rewarding choice for gardeners seeking to support pollinators while maintaining an easy-care landscape. Whether used to soften hardscapes or provide a burst of color and nectar in a native planting, Lonicera sempervirens 'Magnifica' is a truly magnificent addition to any pollinator-friendly garden.
This cultivar came to North Creek via our friend Charles Cresson, who got it from Edgewood Garden Center, Edgewood, Colorado when there with PPA in 1996.
Growing & Maintenance Tips for Lonicera sempervirens 'Magnifica'
Lonicera sempervirens 'Magnifica' prefers average, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. More sun will give you more flowers. Prune to best suit your site. Lonicera sempervirens is a twining vine and needs small to medium width support to climb. Ideal on a trellis or open fence. Can climb a wood fence with help getting started.
