Additional Information about Geranium maculatum 'Espresso'

Geranium maculatum ‘Espresso’ was found here in Landenberg, PA by Dale Hendricks. A North Creek Unique™ selection, the simple flowers are lavender with a bold burgundy textured palmate foliage. Similar to the 24” height and 18” spread of the straight species, ‘Espresso’ provides dimension to the shade garden with the darker leaves and blooms in late spring and early summer. Another bonus, the semi-evergreen foliage darkens to a deeper hue in the fall and has attractive autumn color. Leaves emerge from a thick rhizome that forms colonies over time.

Wild geranium grows best in part to full shade and average to moist, well-drained soils. It is found in Eastern US in dry or moist woods, woodland edges, and dappled meadows. A word to the wise, as the summer goes on, Geranium maculatum can begin to show heat stress and is best planted with late summer or fall bloomers to complement the wild geranium’s late spring and early summer performance. A light shear in the summer can help rejuvenate any foliage damaged by heat stress. G. maculatum can tolerate full sun as long as the soil is consistently moist.

We love using ‘Espresso’ in woodland gardens or in the part shade border. Wonderful in mass or as an accent plant, ‘Espresso’ can tolerate dry shade. Very low-maintenance, we frequently spot pollinators visiting the blooms of this plant as well as chipmunks merrily eating the seeds in the summer.
