Additional Information about Geranium maculatum 'Dark Roast'

An exciting North Creek discovery! Bright fuchsia petals with white throats glow against a backdrop of rich, dark burgundy foliage, instantly enlivening any shaded garden. This native perennial forms dense clumps and stays unbothered by deer, making it an ideal groundcover for shady spots beneath trees. In early spring, its nectar-rich flowers provide a vital food source for native bees and butterflies, while skippers dart among the blooms and chipmunks scurry around gathering seeds. As the season progresses, the plant continues to support wildlife by offering shelter, especially appreciated by toads. Adaptable and resilient, it even thrives in dry shade under hardwood trees. Its deep fuchsia blossoms remain striking throughout the season, bringing vivid color and texture to woodland gardens while quietly supporting local ecosystems.

G. maculatum is found naturally in open woods, clearings, woods edges and roadsides throughout the Eastern US.

Wild geranium grows best in part to full shade and average to moist, well-drained soils. It is found in Eastern US in dry or moist woods, woodland edges, and dappled meadows. A light shear in the summer can help rejuvenate any foliage damaged by heat stress. G. maculatum can tolerate full sun as long as the soil is consistently moist.

Growing & Maintenance Tips for Geranium maculatum 'Dark Roast'

This plant is easy to grow in average, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to part shade. It adapts well to many soil types, even drier conditions. In ideal settings, it will naturalize on its own through self-seeding. If the foliage starts to look tired during hot, dry stretches of summer, a light trim will help it bounce back.
