Position Summary

A Nursery Intern performs a variety of duties under the direction of the Plant Trials Manager.  They will perform various operational functions in various departments to ensure the effective operation of the facility by ensuring that prescribed schedules, policies, and procedures are followed.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Assist Plant Trials Manager, or manager where assigned, in completing duties
Primary responsibilities include assisting with the following, meeting quality work standards: stock potting and maintenance; trims, consolidations, and transfers; planting crops on production line; operation of seed production line; setting down planted flats in the greenhouses; maintenance of proper inventory level of materials and supplies; watering, disinfecting greenhouses, or other related growing tasks, as directed by Growing Coordinator; planting, harvesting, and maintenance of vegetable garden; maintenance of grounds and gardens (weeding, mulching)
Clean workstations and common areas
Perform additional duties as required

Knowledge / Skills Required

Effective listening and communication skills; can organize thoughts well and express them in a clear manner that is well received
Basic plant knowledge helpful but not required
General knowledge of perennial plant identification, local weeds, and an interest in native plants and their culture helpful
Ability to lift 25 lbs. and work in repetitive situations

Desired Skills

Adhere to standard work procedures, company policies and safety procedures
Be reliable and consistent in attendance and punctuality, report to work on time; follow the timekeeping process
Ability to work 40 hours per week
Invest the time and effort to do a good job; take pride in accomplishments; exercise initiative
Follow directions; carry out and perform assigned tasks
Can produce results in a sometimes-chaotic situation; stays calm in difficult situations
Follow and sustain LEAN practices in day-to-day tasks
Maintain a clean working area ("start clean, work clean, finish clean")
Keep supervisor informed
Be a team player with a "can-do" attitude; be flexible and adaptable in approach to work
Work in a safe manner, immediately reporting any unsafe conditions, acts, or safety incidents
Follow Systems Approach to Nursery Certification (SANC) practices in day-to-day tasks; strive for continual improvement of our facility practices and internal procedures
