Additional Information about Blephilia subnuda

Blephilia subnuda is a quiet native presence, most at home in open woods, glades, and mesic forest edges. Though its range is scattered, and in some states considered threatened, this perennial holds its ground with a steady, clumping habit, spreading gradually by seed and short stem divisions.

In the Southeast, it appears only in select pockets, including rocky limestone forests of the Cumberland Plateau in northeastern Alabama and Tennessee (which is on the endangered list). There, it rises on upright, unbranched stems often flushed with red, lined with opposite, lance-shaped leaves that are finely toothed and smooth to the touch. Like others in the mint family, the foliage releases a light, refreshing scent when crushed.

From late spring into early summer, the stems are ringed with dense whorls of small, tubular flowers that bloom for several weeks. Each blossom is delicately two-lipped, opening in shades of soft white to pale pink, often marked with subtle purple spotting.
