Baptisia 'Ivory Towers' PP26827

false indigo

This new introduction from Tony Avent of Plant Delight’s Baptisia breeding program, ‘Ivory Towers’ is a spectacle to behold. Beginning the season with unique dark grey-purple flowering stems, the flowers unfurl into a beautiful ivory white, held high and erect above the foliage. A vigorous plant with an upright and dense canopy, it is believed to be a spontaneous seedling between B. alba and perhaps B. albescens.

One of Mt. Cuba Center's highest-rated Baptisia in their recent trials - receiving 4.8 stars!

"Baptisia ‘Ivory Towers’ has consistently been one of the standout cultivars in our trial. The stems emerge with a purplish tinge that slowly fades as they elongate. When in bloom, ‘Ivory Towers’ produces tall inflorescences of pure white flowers that last for three weeks. The flowers give way to large, blocky fruit that persist above the foliage throughout the summer and early fall. Even though ‘Ivory Towers’ is a larger plant, its habit is more upright and vase-shaped, so it doesn’t occupy the same amount of space, width wise, as some of the other large cultivars. The leafless lower portion of the stems also give ‘Ivory Towers’ a very graceful looking silhouette." - Mt. Cuba Center

The genus name comes from the Greek word "bapto" which means "to dye" because some of the darker flowered species were used as dyes.

Baptisia 'Ivory Towers' Growing and Maintenance Tips

Grow in full sun or part shade in average to dry soil. Baptisia has a very deep tap root, giving it the ability to survive long dry periods and making it a challenge to move once it is established. Move in the early spring if you must. Full sun is best for the best flowering and performance.
