Eriogonum allenii 'Little Rascal' (Shale barrens buckwheat)

Eriogonum allenii 'Little Rascal'

Shale barrens buckwheat

Never heard of Eriogonum 'Little Rascal'? We're not suprised! This affectionately named perennial is one of the trade's best kept secrets and is an underused gem. Although a rare plant in the wild, this Jelitto Seeds selection of Eriogonum allennii has a wide range of landscape applications. With a tidy, low-growing habit of gray-green, paddle-shaped leaves, it bursts with golden yellow umbels that age to various shades of bronzy orange in the late summer. A wonderful little plant at 18-24” tall, it is drought tolerant, durable and long flowering.

Shale barrens buckwheat Interesting Notes

Eriogonum alleni is endemic to ten counties in the southern Appalachians – specifically the shale barrens that are south-facing, steep slopes with an exposed rocky surface. Shale barrens buckwheat truly flourishes in poor soil with lots of sun and can tolerate heat. However, it is reported to be shade intolerant by a study at Virginia Tech.

From green roofs to urban meadows, 'Little Rascal' is a great performer in the hot and xeric conditions that characterize so many tough landscape sites these days. It is has been just as dependable in the rich well-drained soils of our unirrigated trial gardens. It is currently under trial in our green roof and has also been trialed in parking medians to great success. Buckwheat provides valuable nectar for butterflies, honeybees, bumblebees, and hummingbirds.
