Baptisia × variicolor 'Twilite' (False indigo)

Baptisia × variicolor 'Twilite' Prairieblues™ PP19011

False indigo

Twilite Prairieblues™ is the first introduction from the Baptisia breeding program conducted by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. The B. australis x sphaerocarpa cross has brought us a very strong and production friendly plant with excellent hybrid vigor. By the third year these plants produce almost 100 flower spikes of unique deep violet-purple, nearly burgundy flowers highlighted by a lemon-yellow keel. Held above the handsome foliage, the inflorescences can be up to 32" long!

False indigo Interesting Notes

An extremely robust and vigorous bicolor Baptisia, selected from a controlled cross of Baptisia (australis x sphaerocarpa) conducted by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. Three-year-old plants produce upward of a hundred flowering stems covered with deep violet-purple flowers highlighted by lemon-yellow keels. The inflorescences are held above the handsome blue-green foliage and can be up to 32" long. This selection began flowering its second year in the ground (from a 4" pot). Blooms are long lasting, beginning in late May and continuing through the first few weeks of June. The flowers fade to a lovely violet-purple. Mature plants measure 3' to 5' tall and 4' to 5' wide. - Chicagoland Grows®

The genus name comes from the Greek word "bapto" which means "to dye" because some of the darker flowered species were used as dyes.
