Eupatorium maculatum 'Bartered Bride'

Joe Pye Weed

Stands of these pure white flowers in an open garden leaves one with a free
spirited and wild feeling as these tall prairie flowers come alive with butter-
flies. The flowers, blooming from July to September, are supported by bold
stems. Overall, striking and different.

Interesting Notes

My favorite joe pye weed story is that of former NC nurserymen, Allen Bush, who when visiting Germany was astounded by the wonderful perennial that he saw in every public garden and park. He then ordered several hundred of these eupatoriums from Germany to propagate and sell, only to find out soon after they arrived that he his property was filled with thousands of the same plant, which were being mowed to the ground along the roadside. Growing and Maintenance Tips

E.maculatum is a native prairie plant that thrives best in average to moist
locations. This species can easily be propagated by division, seed or stem
cuttings. If growing from seed, it may need to undergo a cold, moist treat-
ment for 4-6 weeks. Transplanting in the spring can also be done.
Fertilization will be of some benefit as well as staking for support. Pruning
in early summer may reduce the final plant height by a few feet, in borders
may need dividing every few years to maintain vigor.
