Coreopsis tripteris 'Gold Standard'

tall tickseed

This accession of C. tripteris was collected by Mt. Cuba Center in the wild and shows better garden performance than the straight species. This plant is approximately 1’ shorter and blooms for an additional six weeks. The flowers were also born on shorter, secondary growth. This characteristic distributed the floral display throughout the entire plant rather than solely at the top.

Coreopsis tripteris ‘Gold Standard’ is a tall form of coreopsis that maintains the graceful wildness of the straight species while having a shorter form, more blooms, and longer bloom time. Perfect for the back of a garden border or in spacious landscape applications, ‘Gold Standard’, grows 5.5’-6’ tall and spreads slowly by rhizome. The blooms are cheerful yellow daisy-like flowers with dark center cones. It has excellent disease resistance and blooms from late summer to early fall.

Coreopsis tripteris is native to eastern North America and can be found in prairies, dry open woods, and in disturbed areas like along railroad tracks. It grows easily in dry to medium soil moisture levels in well-draining soils in full-sun. However, it thrives in lean, rocky soils and also tolerates heavy clay because of how it forms shallow mat-forming rhizomes. Division of the plant every 2-3 years is encouraged to maintain robust growth and bloom.
