Phlox is a widely grown perennial with strong stems and showy domed flowerheads which persist for many weeks during the summer. It is an excellent plant for use in the perennial border or cutting garden, but requires some extra maintenance for optimum growth. Phlox are heavy feeders. They need rich, well drained garden soil that has a high organic content. A periodic application of 5-10-5 fertilizer is beneficial. Fertility must be available in the upper 6" of the soil, because the roots seldom penetrate deeper than 6". The
roots will, however, extend as far as 2' from the crown, utilizing nutrients and
competing with other plants in the area. Each clump should have a minimum space of 18" across when fully developed. Phlox flowers best in full sun,
although light afternoon shade is tolerated. Plants need good air circulation and an abundance of water which must be properly applied at ground level through a soaker hose, NOT applied from overhead directly onto the foliage. (http://www.williams-nursery.com/phlox%20paniculata.htm)

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Phlox paniculata thrives in organic, moist to moderately dry in sun to light shade. Tolerant of drought once established. Give good air circulation and keep well watered to reduce growth of powdery mildew. Benefits from occasional fertilization.
