Garden phlox Interesting Notes

The genus name Phlox is derived from the Greek word for flame.

‘David’s Lavender’ is a lavender-flowered sport of the popular disease-resistant white-flowered cultivar known as Phlox paniculata ‘David’. ‘David’s Lavender’ is an upright, conical perennial that typically grows in a clump to 3-4’ tall on stiff stems clad with narrow, opposite, pointed, elliptic, deep green leaves (to 5” long). Stems of this cultivar seldom need staking. Fragrant tubular lavender flowers (each to 1/2” diameter) appear in densely packed large terminal clusters (each to 8-10’ long) over a long July to September bloom period. Each individual flower has a long corolla tube and five flat petal-like lobes. - Missouri Botanical Garden

Phlox paniculata 'David's Lavender' Growing and Maintenance Tips

Phlox paniculata thrives in organic, moist to average soil in full sun to light shade. Plants in shade will have smaller flowers and weaker stems. Tolerant of drought once established. Give good air circulation and keep well watered to reduce growth of powdery mildew, though 'David's Lavender' is one of the most mildew resistant cultivars on the market. Benefits from occasional fertilization. Deadhead to prolong blooming season.
