Phlox carolina var angusta

Phlox carolina var angusta 'Gypsy Love'

Carolina Phlox

This selection came from a batch of seedlings that we planted out. Gypsy Love is short and spreads slowly to form a tidy colony. Its foliage is narrow and glossy, and in our experience, never has a trace of mildew. In late June it bursts into bloom with true pink flowers that often laste into August. It combines beautifully with other low perennials and is ideal for containers or smaller gardens. A naturalized mass is a sight to behold!! Its light and lovely fragrance is pleasant for patio plantings.

Interesting Notes

The original species are native to North America. From these have been developed numerous garden hybrids which generally flower during July and August - they vary a little in height but are generally around the 90cm mark. In colour they range from white, through pinks and mauves to crimson and purple. As far as we have experienced them, there are no true blues (although many are optimistically named to suggest this!) but a number will give a good impression of blue when viewed in shade, especially in the evening.

The herbaceous Phloxes all prefer a good soil which does not dry out in the summer, particularly just before and while they flower. If they need watering at these times it is best to make sure you water the ground, not the leaves, so as not to encourage the formation of mildew(*more info). A moisture retentive mulch is a good idea.

They do not seem to be fussy as to the alkalinity or acidity of the soil but we have wondered whether the so-called blues look bluer on an acid soil? - we often hear that they have such wonderful blue phloxes in Ireland - is this the case? fsperennials.co.uk
