Interesting Notes

Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ is a great accent sedge made popular by its arching habit and fountains of narrow leaves with broad cream stripes and dark green margins. Wonderful in a container or by a small garden path, this statement clumping carex becomes an architectural feature wherever it is planted. While evergreen in most of its growing range, in colder climes, it is useful to cut back foliage in the late winter.

Originally from dry woods and rocky slopes in Honshu Island, Japan, Carex oshimensis fine-textured leaves and 10”-16” height make it a wonderful find. It prefers medium to wet soils, thriving best in light shade and moist garden soil. Plant spreads slowly by rhizome. Brighter light levels can leach the coloring of the leaves.

Adaptable, deer-resistant, and disease resistant, Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ is a trooper in the garden and does best in areas where its variegation can add contrast and be observed by the garden visitor. We love using it in a mixed planter for additional dimension.
