Heuchera americana 'Dale's Strain'

'Dale's Strain' grows best in rich, loamy, moist, well-drained soil in part to full shade. If it is to be grown in full sun, adequate moisture is a must! Divide clumps every 3-4 years. May be raised by seed as well. Deadhead to extend flowering season. Use as a edging plant in perennial beds or to add interest to the woodland garden.

Heuchera americana 'Dale's Strain' is a seed propagated strain selected in North Carolina by Dale Hendricks. Compared to the straight species, it has unique silver-blue marbled foliage and excitingly variable silver venation. In our region Heuchera 'Dale's Strain' is semi-evergreen, however in warmer climates its foliage is more consistently evergreen through the winter. In the spring, pinkish white flowers appear atop long, delicate panicles. Plant grows 12-18” tall and spreads to 18” clump over time.

Heuchera americana can be found growing naturally in rocky open woodlands east of the Rocky Mountains. Fittingly, Heuchera 'Dale's strain' performs best in organically rich, mesic soils in partial sun or light shade. This seed cultivar was found in the mountains of North Carolina and can tolerate dry shade.

For best performance as a groundcover mass, trim back flower panicles after bloom to allow foliage display to be truly appreciated. A wonderful mass planting, H. ‘Dale’s Strain’ wanders beautifully around spring Phlox, emerging ferns, and along the edge of a woodland garden. Plant can tolerate more light but must have consistent moisture in bright conditions.
