Position Summary

The Gardens Intern will assist the Gardens Department at North Creek Nurseries in maintaining the display gardens, stormwater management systems, trial beds, new plant collections, and grounds.  They will perform various functions to ensure the effective operation of the Gardens Department by adhering to prescribed schedules, policies and procedures.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Maintain site-specific display and trial gardens, including, but not limited to planting, mulching, weeding, and irrigating
Assist in the maintenance of Best Management Practices (BMPs) including a 4-tier stormwater management system, living walls, green roof, and meadows
General turf and grounds maintenance including mowing, raking, string trimming, and herbicide applications
Assist with containerized trial plant maintenance
Install new garden projects as needed
Perform additional duties as required

Knowledge / Skills Required

Willingness to learn and operate machinery, including but not limited to tractors and mowers
Ability to work in all weather conditions; tackle tasks that are sometimes physically demanding
Must have effective listening and communication skills

Ability to work 40 hours per week
Ability to work independently and/or with a crew; is a team player

Education

Current undergraduate student of horticulture or related field with a strong interest in gardening
General knowledge of perennial plant and weed identification, and has an interest in native plants and their culture
