As a wholesale propagation nursery located in Landenberg, Pennsylvania, North Creek Nurseries provides top quality starter plugs to retail & wholesale nurseries, garden centers, mail order companies and landscape professionals.  We specialize in perennials, ornamental grasses, ferns and vines with an emphasis on Eastern US natives.  Our nursery has one and a half acres of on-site display and trial gardens that fall under the care of the Research & Development and New Products Department.

Position Summary

The R&D Intern will work directly with the R&D Department and assist in garden and grounds maintenance.  The Intern will perform assigned tasks to the best of their ability in support of the mission of the R&D Department.  Daily responsibilities will include garden maintenance, plant evaluation, and general operational support of a wholesale perennial nursery.  Opportunities to visit local nurseries and gardens may arise depending on the candidate's field of interest.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Maintain site-specific display and trial gardens in a multitude of unique environments; maintenance to include but not limited to planting, mulching, weeding, irrigating
Maintain Best Management Practices sites, including a 4-tier storm water management system, living walls, green roofs, side-by-side trials and meadows
Assist in the installation of new garden projects
Assist with herbicide applications
Assist the Integrated Pest Management Department with application of general farm sprays
Assist in data collection for plant trial evaluations
Assist with containerized, trial plant material in the R&D greenhouses
May assist other departments as needed

Knowledge / Skills Required

Willingness to learn and operate machinery, including but not limited to tractors and mowers
Ability to lift 50 pounds and to work in repetitive situations under varying weather conditions
Must have effective listening and communication skills

Education

Current undergraduate student of horticulture or related field with a background and interest in garden maintenance
Should have general knowledge of perennial plant identification, local weeds, and have an interest in native plants and their culture
