LAKE FOREST: PRELUDE TO MODERNISM
Date: Friday, November 6
Time: 9:30 am - 6:30 pm
Location: 6 PDH
Ticketed Event: Yes
Join TCLF for a daylong excursion to enchanting Lake Forest, Illinois. Situated 30 miles North of Chicago on Lake Michigan, it has been a place of both landscape and architectural significance since its inception. The original design by Almerin Hotchkiss in 1857 provided for parkland, a cemetery, and a commercial town center adjacent to commuter rail lines to Chicago, with Lake Forest College at the center of the community. We’ll view the transition from the end of the Country Place Era to the beginning of Modern design. Houses by Frank Lloyd Wright, Howard Van Doren Shaw, and David Adler are set into landscapes by Rose Standish Nichols, Frederick Law Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot, the Olmsted Brothers, and Jens Jensen. O.C. Simonds designed Forest Park and worked on Lake Forest Cemetery. Shaw designed Market Square in 1916, an early example of a planned shopping center. The day ends with a reception at the elegant Arts Club of Chicago where we will launch the What’s Out There Chicago Guide and present TCLF’s Stewardship Excellence Award. Cost of ticket: $1,000. Transportation will be provided. Space is limited, and proceeds support TCLF’s educational initiatives. Visit http://www.tclf.org/
